jared it’s great to be uh here and to talk about all the progress that we have made yeah i’m going to i’m going to hand it over to gowdy in a moment for the sponsorship but uh but monarch just had some pretty some pretty big news come out i i guess was that in the end of 2021 or 2022 that all the funding uh came through yeah it was at the end of last year uh very excited to share that we are continuing to you know to add more investors on board and not just financial investors but strategic investors we’ve always believed that agriculture is an ecosystem the farmer should not be tied into you’re the ceo and the founder of monarch tractor um so so much to cover i hope i can uh i can do your company justice for what you’re doing and what you’re accomplishing um i wanna circle back just quickly to the funding um i didn’t realize so this was actually a some of this the 61 million that came in that was um that was actually company reinvesting which is quite a nod to what you’ve accomplished exactly a lot of our investors who invested in our series a at the beginning of last year uh came back at the end of last year to reinvest so again that’s a word of confidence on uh not just our technology but also the progress that we’re making uh you know year on year so cnh industrial vst almost every one of our early investors has reinvested last year along with new investors who are starting to see the potential of the technology not just nationwide here in america jared but also global our lead investor is aston orr they invested because they are specifically interested in food and agriculture from a european perspective they’re starting to see some of the challenges u.s farmers are facing also being a global issue is it what do you think i mean there’s a lot that stands out but what do you think is is um what have you done between the first round and now to to gain that confidence of investor because it’s one thing to gain investment at the beginning when the you know when you have an idea and a concept and goals um it’s another thing that that round b is that that’s a huge nod to a company so what is what is it what what are those landmarks that you hit that you really think um instilled that confidence yeah the big difference is even though the company and the technology has been around our first patents were filed you know back in 2017 time frame the technology was developed in the 2015 to 2017 time frame and the monarch as an entity was in stealth mode until 2019 and once we first came out and showcased what an electric uh automated tractor is looks like and should look like that’s what led to that first round of funding but the interesting thing and the difference between the first round and the second round is basically market traction the fact that we have hundreds of farmers both large and small uh you know expressing uh you know committed interest in acquiring our tractor and not just one two of them a number of farmers have placed uh you know uh you know reservations for like five plus tractors in some cases is a nod to uh you know the fact that we have a product that meets the needs of the farmer and that’s what really convinced you know the investors to come back in and new investors to join the portfolio as well let’s talk about the tractor itself for a little bit then because meeting the needs of the tractor you’ve developed a the model you developed is is arguably i think the highest demand track on the market is that right correct yeah so our focus right from day one has been very much very much about let’s start off with fruits and vegetables what is referred to commonly here in the us as the specialty market so specialty market tractors are often smaller but globally the platform that we have and the horsepower class that we are in is the highest by volume in terms of unit volumes so you know we are looking at like millions of these tractors that are produced and deployed worldwide and our vision always was to start with addressing the needs of the fruits and vegetables farmers in the you know in the us but then have a platform that is scalable globally so that’s why we’re excited about the class that we’re in and very often we still do get feedback that hey you know this cannot do you know uh the work that our 300 horsepower 250 horsepower or 200 horsepower tractor does and that’s true uh but again for us our initial focus is very much on the fruits and vegetables where both the tractor class but also the challenges that the fruits and vegetables farmers are facing is at a completely different scale because they have three times the labor of what you see for what we call the the cash crops right um the three times the labor means that the pain that the farmers are facing in fruits and vegetables is an order of magnitude higher so we are really focused on addressing those needs so our tractor is not a half a million dollar tractor right our tractor is in a sixty thousand dollar tractor i see so when you started now now with that decision how did you get to that it was was it based on market research or was it pretty clear from the very beginning this is the this is the model that we want to get into the market or or was there was it was it ever considered to go with the larger scale ones to start yeah no we spent a lot of time looking at the needs of the market and also looking at where the opportunities are and also looking at impact so when we talk about sustainability impact and the needs you know again we’re very close to you know hearing and feeling the needs of the california farmers you know who are struggling with you know sustainability demands who are struggling with labor shortages etc so after polling in all of the the farmers here and realizing that their their needs and their demands were very much aligned with what the global farmer was facing right every farmer around the world has a labor challenge these days every farmer around the world is being asked by their buyers to provide more data on emissions and to explain their sustainability footprint right so these things were happening so when we started looking at that market we felt that the pain points were very high in the specialty fruits and vegetables market just because of the amount of labor that they need and also the fact that technology solutions were not being targeted towards them because it was seen as a niche market where the volumes were low the margins were low right all the big companies the big equipment companies if you look at their tractor sizes right even the recent announcements you know the tractor sizes are very much catering towards the the large farm operations not the specialty tractors so we wanted to make a difference with the specialty tractors and then make a difference around the world so that’s why all of that research basically led us to the conclusion that if we can build a high-tech tractor that answers the demands of the fruits and vegetables farmers and if that class is the most commonly used tractor platform in the world we can really increase the volumes of the tractor side and then bring the cost down and make high tech available to the farmers right at a much lower cost just because of the the volumes that we can produce this in so that’s always been our philosophy and mindset and the market research backed it up and the customer’s answers also backed it up yeah that the digital transformation side of it can we talk a little bit about the capabilities like i i go on even on your website um going on to your home page i’m seeing i’m seeing these the tractor being used in different applications hopefully we can bring some of that up um so what all i mean it’s it’s it’s it’s not just doing an operation but it’s also collecting data and it’s electric and it’s all these things can you sort of give the the the scope of what this unit actually is capable of yeah so for us when we talk to farmers it’s a very straightforward value proposition number one it’s electric which means and it does everything your existing tractor in this class does which means you’re seeing diesel savings number two we can elevate your tractor driver we can take him off the seat and have him manage six to eight tractors right we are using technology to make it easy for the tractor driver to manage a fleet not using technology to say you should hire a more skilled person so that results in wow in labor efficiency and savings right so your tractor driver now you know can do more and can do other jobs on the farm and watch a fleet of six to eight tractors so those two things result in tremendous savings but also the fact that our tractor and we have sensors that enable the driver optional feature set means that while our tractor is doing operations we can also provide real-time alerts and longer-term efficiency recommendations back to the farmer it’s a logical uh unit to do that right because the tractor is the one that goes down that row a number of times you don’t have to pay for an additional drone run right or an airplane data collection or satellite data collection the tractor is already there doing the the work so those are the three components jared when we talk to our farmers but it starts off with electric it starts off with how can we make their you know their existing drivers more efficient in managing fleets and then also you know do the same thing that the driver does when he’s on the tractor seat which is you know he’s keeping an eye on not just the operation that’s happening behind them but also seeing what’s happening uh you know at the plant level and then relay that back to the farm operations manager or the owner of the farm just going back to the beginning so when was the first unit put out um in operations yeah our first electric tractor has been out which is what we call our alpha model right was a very small electric tractor that has been in testing since 2017 and then we built our beta tractor which showcased both you know electric and automated and smart data you know in 2019 and then now we have our pilot series tractor and the as we have gone through these iterations we have collected a lot of feedback from farmers and changed the tractor so that we are taking their uh you know their feedback into account and now we have our pilot series tractor and now we have our next generation tractor coming out which will be the the production design and then heading out to production so we have like the longest history of electric vehicle development out in the farm and not just here but also globally right our first alpha tractor we collected feedback in asia to see what the asian farmer wants and now with our pilot series tractors again we’re out in the field constantly working with farmers with their drivers and their implements to get feedback on uh not just our tractor but also how our tractor integrates into their operations how did you go about building a team to put all this together you know over this period of time i mean i’m sure you know like any company people do will come and go a bit but but what’s sort of that core that you’re looking for for people while you’re trying to get to this end goal of i mean really transforming an industry exactly uh and what we look for when we when we bring people to join our team jared is the mission focus right and our mission focus has always been farmer first like how do we provide solutions that make sense for the farmer and the second part of that is sustainability how do we do that in such a way that it’s long-term sustainable for the health of the soil for the health of the farmer and the community so those are the two areas so when we look for people we look for people who who really feel an emotional connection to that mission of you know of making our food ecosystem more profitable for the farmers number one and more sustainable because without the profitability the sustainability is not going to come that’s right so that’s our mission focus so to answer your question in the early days it was quite challenging because we were trying to hire the the best talent pool right who had a connection to the food ecosystem and then we would take them away from their comfortable chairs and desks and everything else that you see in silicon valley yeah and put them in a you know put them in a tent on a farm right and say guys we’re gonna be here for the next week you know they’re looking to feel the pain yeah exactly yeah so but off late right and even now a part of our recruiting process is we take all the people out to the farm it doesn’t matter whether you’re in the administration side at monarch or whether you’re on the engineering side or you’re on the testing side all of these people get a chance to see the farm see the tractor operating on the farm and understand why what we’re doing is very important so to answer your question it’s it’s it is quite challenging this is not something for that is something for every engineer yeah but for the right kind of engineers who really want to make a difference right like at a global scale and to change the food ecosystem i think this is the right one and for the right kind of engineers who want to get their feet dirty and they’re not afraid of getting their laptop wet and dirty out in the mud this is the right kind of uh you know right kind of job so we we try very hard to find the right people it’s not easy but we’re very selective about that as well have you seen have you i have seen it in work where you there’s there’s uh types of people that they just haven’t been out let’s say they haven’t been out in the field like they’ve never done in their life um you know in my case coming from the heavy industry side you know more like you know construction mining sites and that sort of thing um but then you see some people that just as their personality they’re so passionate and they’re so their willpower is so great someone that you might think would actually be able to handle it once they get out into the real world application they’re it’s not for them but then someone else will step up that just they just haven’t had the opportunity have you seen that i mean you must sort of see a different side of people when you bring them out into that tent for a week out in the middle of an agriculture setting yeah most definitely right and we have seen people that we initially thought oh my god this person is not going to cut it you know actually flourish and turn into some of our you know rock star team members whether it’s on the sales side whether it’s on the marketing side whether it’s on the engineering side or administration site but to answer a question we’ve also seen people that we thought you know will flourish in this environment and it’s just too hard there’s always an easier way to make money if if that’s the primary motivator especially uh out here in the bay area right so we’re not afraid to um you know uh wish them well and yeah you know have them explore the other adventures but i think the question that you’re asking jared is a great point i think we need a new kind of mindset and that comes from a balance in the team between the experienced side and also new people who are new to this field working together if we just have one or the other we are not going to see the kind of accelerated innovation that we want at monarch so that’s what we try to find a balance of we want people who understand farming we want want people who who relate to this kind of technology on the electrification side on some of the smart automated features etc but at the same time we want people to come in with a clear mindset and say how do i solve this farmer’s problem right so it’s that mixture of both those people working together that’s the magic you you mentioned you mentioned engineers a couple times and i’m just curious putting this technology together um the design of the tractor but also the integration of technology is it just engineers that do it or how does that actually all physically come together um as an end product like what what kind of people i mean you must have all diff it might is it just engineers or are there other uh specialists that need need to come in no i think it takes a whole ecosystem right so when our product development cycle runs all the way from technology side where the engineers contribute but all the way down to new tractor drivers right we bring in tractor drivers uh both who are have existing experience on the farm but also new ones who are probably currently working in construction or they’re working other skilled labor jobs they are a part of our testing team so we have a dedicated testing team we have our own dedicated farm out here and it’s basically the whole team working together so at the end of the day if our technology is is clever but if the end user cannot use it it’s a fail yeah so and we’re also not afraid of putting our tractor into actual tractor driver’s hands uh at other farms and saying hey use this right and to be honest there are a number of times when they’ve come back and said hey this this does not work the way i wanted to or i’m having a problem here or yes you think it should happen this way but it doesn’t right so we take all that feedback in so to answer your question it’s not just the engineering side the magic is getting that whole ecosystem working together out on the farm right so the engineer has to be on the farm but also the tractor driver has to be there and there has to be somebody enabling that conversation for us to make that technology better well that kind of that kind of dovetails nicely into the integration question because um these on these farms i mean if they’ve got i i don’t know i mean i’m i’m not an expert in it but let’s say they’ve got 50 tractors and now you’re they’re going to buy eight from you to sort of test them out on in their their environment um how does that work when you have you know one one person running eight tractors but then you have 40 other tractors um that are all that are not they’re being manually operated um or or maybe there’s a mixture of manually and then they’ve got other kinds that are half automated all these different things that are going on so how do you integrate all that in yeah no definitely and we see that as a as a process jared so we can’t expect the farmer to to literally quote unquote bet the farm right on our technology so we see it as an integration that’s why it’s important that the existing people play a a role in this transition so to answer your question if they have 40 tractors or 50 tractors right now and they buy eight of our tractors it’s important that their existing people can use them they can run existing operations the way they have done it and just integrate our equipment into existing operations without fundamental changes right a number of our competitors when they make these unique robots they’re like oh don’t worry now it’s as of service and one of our personnel will be on the field with you and testing all of these things and now you’re asking for operational changes from the farmer’s standpoint right we’re trying to avoid that and we’re saying hey remove one or two of your tractors plug our tractors in and let’s do the operation the same way with your people with your implements and as you get confidence we do expect them to transition more and more of their tractors right over to monarch tractors so that’s our philosophy and it’s going to take three or four years for the farm to you know to transition 50 70 80 90 of their tractors over yeah i i i don’t want to let this what you just said just sort of slip past because there is a lot of that model going on i’ve had people on the show on i’m talking about that model where it’s sort of that service model and it’s sort of a restructuring of operations yeah you probably uh i mean you would have had the option to go that way yeah um what and i’m sure it was a discussion in your team what what was the why did you choose this road as opposed to going that that sort of service you know not rental i forget what they what’s the term they use for that when they do that yeah it’s commonly farming as a service or robot as a service yeah right so for us also don’t get me wrong at some point people will be able to you know rent our tractor use our tractor as a service model eventually and that will be a component of monarch offers but uh we were very clear that we had to set a high bar the high bar is the track the tractor is a key component of farm operations today around the world and we need to give the farmer the confidence that our tractor can basically replace their existing diesel tractor that requires a lot of skilled driver hours on it so if the bar is that then we have to like kind of come out with a product that meets the cost requirements the operations requirements and the people requirements right so we set that high bar for ourselves uh and that was the reason why we said if we don’t succeed on that as a service allows us to skirt a few of those things right if we do it as a service i don’t need to worry about if the existing labor can actually operate our tractor or not right we have our people doing it right yes it lowers the bar but from a tech standpoint and from an adoption standpoint that’s also not great and especially when it comes to peak times everybody wants the tractor and if you’re as a service how do we scale it how do we get utilization up right we’re going to be limited on that side so from a product perspective we have set a very high bar for ourselves saying that we should be able to convince a farmer that they should replace their existing diesel tractor with our tractor you know apples to apples there right and then you know if we can meet that target then we have uh something of value here right so that’s how we looked at it to to be honest uh and like i said as a service has a is is not a bad thing right it has its place uh it was just not a path that we wanted to chase down we wanted a higher bar well you’re also you must i mean there must be a huge market potential for for also smaller operators as well i mean have you got a lot of interest from people that just have one or two tractors um i would i would think that be i mean especially like in areas like california and that that there must be a demand for that as well isn’t there yes there’s been a lot of interest from the smaller farm operations the smaller farmers as well who just have one or two tractors um and that’s again because of the size of our tractor and how easy it’s to operate in the electric nature of it but also we are hoping to transform the small farmers operations right if that small farmer you know might be operating the tractor for mowing if we can kind of automate that mowing side where he programs at once and then we can do the mowing right at night in a quiet manner right when the safety considerations are much more controlled you know and it’s it’s we’re giving him some time back on the mowing side etc so those are the kind of things that the small farmers really find a lot of value in the monarch tractor as well well i was curious about this did is is you are can you depending on their needs i can’t imagine you can cover everything so something are they can they retrofit it or does it or over years is the technologies are going to continue to expand to offer more how are you sort of for lack of a better word customizing it to their needs like based on if they need spray or they or they’re needing it to mow or whatever their need or collecting certain amounts of data or certain types of data how do you sort of juggle all of that yeah and that’s the beauty of like having a traditional tractor interface where like when you if a farmer looks at a tractor from the back you won’t be able to tell that it’s an electric automated tractor apart from the roof right because we have the same hydraulic connections we have the same pto we have the same three-point hitch right and all of those are controllable for us you know from the automation side so once you program them or once you use them the tractor driver can jump off the thing and you know we can repeat those operations just the way he wants them so to answer a question if the farmer has customized his mower or sprayer or has a custom implement that is currently uh you know being pulled with a draw bar or a pt or shaft or run by hydraulics we know we get to do all of that right so that’s the huge advantage of keeping the tractor platform as is from an interface standpoint also if they want to customize it right as long as the customization is on the implement side it’s very easy right if they want to customize the tractor then we need to be a part of that conversation just because of the automation side so but we’re already deploying smart features that allow us to account for any new implements that they attach right and still be able to maintain these operations from a safety standpoint to answer your question our focus initially is definitely on mowing it’s on spraying it’s on hauling it’s on weeding those are the four operations that out of the box right that we want to support for farmers but nothing stopping them from attaching their implement to the standard uh interface at the back and then running the tractor right right just as any other tractor right i i just want to quickly go back to that engineering side because you you had to design a tractor and then you had to make it electric so yeah um was i mean that must have been it must have been quite a a process those first couple years just i mean in manufacturing you know the the suspension system the frame like there’s all these nuts and bolts that you gotta design while you’re designing this sort of futuristic way of doing things right um i mean that day one let’s go with day one actually we’re gonna start designing it well i mean how do you even how do you even start the conversation it’s it’s a little beyond my pay grade and that’s why i’m at it no but again that’s where the team comes into play you know it’s a very uh from from a leadership standpoint it’s an experienced team that’s done these kind of very complex devices before right so if you look at our our chief technology officer dr zachary omahundra right he’s done everything from electric cars to automated planters to elect you know to electric aircraft projects etc so the technology that we’re bringing in you know is experience technology that’s been proven in other areas whether it’s aerospace whether it’s automotive or or agriculture and we’re bringing that to our product number one number two is even on the digital and autonomy side you know we’re bringing the latest and greatest technology you know from if you think about our chief digital officer is chris whitney right he’s he’s had decades of experience in automation uh the kids of experience in data and connectivity so when we say hey how do we make an automated tractor work where there’s no connectivity and sometimes we lose even a gps signal especially in specialty agriculture right we have an experienced team that solved these problems before that we’re bringing to the table but jared you’re absolutely right the way we went about it was we had to reinvent the tractor from the inside out which means all the nuts and bolts had to work at the same time we had to make sure that the tractor did everything that existing tractor did right so for example making sure that the hydraulics work the three-point has worked the pto worked you know at different speeds and how would be smart and automated to where an existing driver who’s not familiar with technology can use it yeah that’s our goal and that’s our difference as well from the big tractor companies and how we approach the problem well i just yeah i was thinking talk about the hydraulics i was just thinking you could have the most amazing tractor and if a farmer went to uh to make an adjustment and the hydraulic system wasn’t right he would could care less if the electric system was amazing yeah exactly yeah yeah how good the cameras are at that time is not gonna yeah he’ll still be hurling his wrench at the ground did um did uh what has been the most challenging through this through this whole period you know has it been designed funding team building you know when you sort of look back i mean you’ve got there’s it’s a very bright future ahead and i think that that that round b of funding is a testament to that but looking back what what is a stretch of time that you went this this is a challenge yeah i mean my philosophy has always been it’s the next stretch that’s going to be the most challenging so we always need to be prepared for it right yeah but honestly speaking jared i mean uh the ag industry and farmers are a very demanding customer right right in terms of if you look at how ag equipment is used uh just because of the nature of the industry right it’s uh it’s it’s very time constrained we don’t have the kind of margins that other industries sometimes have so farmers have to do a lot with very little so then what happens on the equipment side is they they make the equipment they push the limits of what the equipment capabilities are constantly so for us our challenge is how do we make sure that we build a robust reliable tractor that when we give it to a farmer will exceed his expectations right is the biggest challenge we have that has been the biggest challenge for the last year and a half and that will continue to be a challenge going forward but that’s our goal our goal is not to say hey look at this wow technology right it’s about saying here’s a tech that’s going to make a difference to your bottom line and it’s going to exceed your expectations so that’s that’s a high bar when it comes to farmers you know and i um and i can honestly say on this interview and even when i first talked to you i noticed that that that shift or um that that approach that you had because i mean i come from the nuts and bolts world um and so when i’m in a conversation and it probably makes it some in some way qualifies me to be the host because i need it sort of brought down to a level where other people can understand so i can understand it and and i’ve talked to people that they’re approaching it as in we’re basically going to turn your whole world upside down and people that are living in you they’re making a living off this and some of the living is quite hard i mean farming is notoriously a very challenging thing and they’re not dealing with these huge margins right now so you come in and you say yeah we’re going to turn your whole world upside down because we’re amazing and we’re smarter than you it does not work like it really and you see it all the time yeah so so going back to your so going over to your leadership is that something i mean and i’ve talked to you only a couple times um but i’ve seen your approach is that something you learned um is it something you realized with monarch or is it something in another in another part of your career where you realize you had to approach it sort of from that ground level for customers yeah this was something that predated monarch varied but i’ve learned it the hard way from the school of hard knocks where we have developed you know technology sometimes and gone out and then realized that the farmer has generational insights if the farmer is still doing farming by definition is successful right and he’s successful very often because of his insights or her insights over and often gathered over generations right they know their land they know their soil they know their crop they know their weather better than we can at this point in time and probably in the foreseeable future and you know honestly speaking i’ve been out there on the farm standing there thinking holy cow i did not realize all these nuances we have to go back to the drawing board so that’s the school of hard knocks and i often tell people i have a lot of lashings on my back to show for this and i don’t want to get them again so let’s go talk to the farmers who know best let’s give them a tool instead of telling them how to do it you know give them a tool that they can use any way they want to that’s been our philosophy from day one our philosophy from day one is the farmer knows best we need to be their partner in giving them the best tools not in showing up on their farm and saying hey this is how you should do things right because if we take that approach guaranteed guaranteed to fail we are probably missing out on 80 of their insights and knowledge that they have right and i’ve learned it the hard way right i’ve been on those farms where i look like a complete idiot right oh i’ve been there i’ve been there i’ve been there with my little ipad in my hand yeah the answer went oh boy i’m gonna actually uh just walk around quietly yeah exactly ask questions and learn right not tell them how things do right at monarch our philosophy is we have to give them the best tool and help them right in in completing their operations so that’s always been our philosophy from day one just circling back to the investors do you think that that approach um and i’m i’m not asking this with any assumption it’s a genuine question does do you think that approach um does that do the do the investors value that as well that they’re seeing how you’re approaching the farmers and they see it’s more of a long-term solution um or or are they basically looking at the technology the steps that you’ve made and that sort of thing or do they sort of look at the whole thing do you think that that sort of that on the ground focus um is a is a value add for them definitely both components they want to make sure that our technology is innovative and robust and is something that we have an advantage on because they’re investing into our company they want to make sure that it’s not a technology that somebody else can develop in years right so we feel like you know we do have a technology that’s of value there so the investors want to get some confidence on that side there but also they want to make sure these these days investors are quite savvy uh especially investors investing in food and act because they have also gone through a number of uh historical uh investments where they understand the challenges of succeeding in farming so they want to talk to the farmer they’re like they’re like monarch your team is great your technology is great we want to talk to the farmer and here what their perspective on your technology is so they look at both those things is the technology of value do we have a differentiator what do the farmers think about your technology and use their real value for the farmer so they want uh all of our investors have done that they’ve talked to our our farm partners directly and gotten that feedback and that confidence before they did the investment but also honestly there’s been a lot of investors who said we know farming is hard uh you know getting ag tech to be successful is very hard so this is not our field to play in and that’s okay with us too yeah you want people i mean you want people that believe in what you’re doing and and that really understand the process of it as well you don’t want blind belief because it is going to be a long process exactly right we won’t believe we want people who to join us who believe in our team who believe in our product and who understand that this is a hard problem yeah and very often especially tech investors you know uh you know just like any other investor they’re looking at where they can put their money in and what their rate of return is in the shortest period of time right yeah so those are not our investors so i’m very proud of the kind of investors we have these are all investors with a long-term perspective and they believe in the fact that our product can change farming for farmers around the world and without that you know we don’t have them join uh join monarch yeah what um just before we wrap up the interview you sort of touched on it earlier but what’s sort of the next um from your perspective and of course you’re you’re you’ve talked a lot about listening to farmers and on the ground um but from what your perspective right now where do you see what’s what’s the next couple years next few years uh what what are you what are your goals and targets and and landmarks you need to hit yeah for us it’s it’s about now you know fulfilling the faith that a lot of farmers have put in us you know by putting their reservations in so we need to put tractors in their hands uh allow their people to use it so that’s what the next two years is going to look like and start doing that and also supporting the farmers i’m i’m under no illusion and nobody on our team is under any illusion that new technology is going to be challenging to deploy so we’re spending a lot of time on how do we support our early adopter farmers to the best uh ability possible so that they don’t feel the brunt of tech very often right in the past uh you know aggregate has been about parachuting solutions right it’s basically you know they just drop a solution off into the field tell farmers how amazing it is and then that’s that right and that’s the reason why we have not seen these things get we have not seen big changes right what we want to do is we want to be there out on the farm with them if something happens to our tractor we want to support them through that whole process and make sure that their operations are not impacted so our next two years is about putting our tractors into farmer sands and supporting them as and when they have challenges right and we we don’t expect a smooth rollout right we expect to work with farmers through it so that’s our philosophy so that’s a that’s a big ask that’s what we’re prepping for yeah it’s uh no it’s very exciting and i really i really enjoy just and i right from when i first talked to you as i mentioned earlier i i saw that there was a genuine approach to try to develop this in a way that yeah it’s not parachuting in it’s actually trying to integrate um based on their needs but bring a new technology and you are transforming an industry but transform it with the farmers not not sort of in spite of them and it’s you know it’s it’s it’s really great to see yeah um you know uh we’ve we’ve got a lot of agriculture out here um in bc vancouver where i’m based so you know we’re we’re trying to do a lot to part two so hopefully you’ll come back on within the next year or so um and hopefully you’ll have some units out on the ground in bc and we can uh maybe we can do some on-site stuff it’d be great to see uh actually be standing beside the tractor doing one of these interviews happy to do that 0.16 what have you done between the first
0.16 round and now

0.16 to gain that confidence of investor
0.16 because it&;s one thing to gain
0.16 investment at the beginning when the you
0.16 know when you have an idea and a concept
0.16 and goals um it&;s another thing that
0.16 that round b is that that&;s a huge nod
0.16 to a company so what is what is it what
0.16 what are those landmarks that you hit
0.16 that you really think um instilled that
0.16 confidence
0.16 yeah the big difference is even though
0.16 the company and the technology has been
0.16 around our first patents were filed you
0.16 know back in 2017 time frame the
0.16 technology was developed in the 2015 to
0.16 2017 time frame
0.16 and the monarch as an entity was in
0.16 stealth mode until 2019
0.16 and once we first came out and showcased
0.16 what an electric uh automated tractor is
0.16 looks like and should look like that&;s
0.16 what led to that first round of funding
0.16 but the interesting thing and the
0.16 difference between the first round and
0.16 the second round is basically market
0.16 traction the fact that we have hundreds
0.16 of farmers both large and small uh you
0.16 know expressing uh you know committed
0.16 interest
0.16 in acquiring our tractor and not just
0.16 one two of them a number of farmers have
0.16 placed uh you know uh you know
0.16 reservations for like five plus tractors
0.16 in some cases
0.16 is a nod to
0.16 uh you know the fact that we have a
0.16 product that meets the needs of the
0.16 farmer
0.16 and that&;s what really convinced you
0.16 know the investors to come back in and
0.16 new investors to join the portfolio as
0.16 well
0.16 let&;s talk about the tractor itself for
0.16 a little bit then because meeting the
0.16 needs of the tractor you&;ve developed a
0.16 the model you developed is is arguably i
0.16 think the highest demand track on the
0.16 market is that right
0.16 correct yeah so our focus right from day
0.16 one has been very much very much about
0.16 let&;s start off with fruits and
0.16 vegetables
0.16 what is referred to commonly here in the
0.16 us as the specialty market
0.16 so specialty market tractors are often
0.16 smaller
0.16 but globally the platform that we have
0.16 and the horsepower class that we are in
0.16 is the highest by volume in terms of
0.16 unit volumes
0.16 so you know we are looking at like
0.16 millions of these tractors that are
0.16 produced and deployed worldwide
0.16 and our vision always was to start with
0.16 addressing the needs of the fruits and
0.16 vegetables farmers in the you know in
0.16 the us
0.16 but then have a platform that is
0.16 scalable globally
0.16 so that&;s why we&;re excited about the
0.16 class that we&;re in
0.16 and very often we still do get feedback
0.16 that hey you know this cannot do
0.16 you know uh the work that our 300
0.16 horsepower 250 horsepower or 200
0.16 horsepower tractor does and that&;s true
0.16 uh but again for us our initial focus is
0.16 very much on the fruits and vegetables
0.16 where
0.16 both the tractor class but also the
0.16 challenges that the fruits and
0.16 vegetables farmers are facing is at a
0.16 completely different scale
0.16 because they have three times the labor
0.16 of what you see for
0.16 what we call the the cash crops right
0.16 um the three times the labor means that
0.16 the pain that the farmers are facing in
0.16 fruits and vegetables is an order of
0.16 magnitude higher so we are really
0.16 focused on addressing those needs
0.16 so our tractor is not a half a million
0.16 dollar tractor right our tractor is in a
0.16 sixty thousand dollar tractor
0.16 i see so when you started now now with
0.16 that decision
0.16 how did you get to that it was was it
0.16 based on market research or was it
0.16 pretty clear from the very beginning
0.16 this is the this is the model that we
0.16 want to get into the market or or was
0.16 there was it was it ever considered to
0.16 go with the larger scale ones to start
0.16 yeah no we spent a lot of time looking
0.16 at the needs of the market and also
0.16 looking at where the opportunities are
0.16 and also looking at impact
0.16 so when we talk about sustainability
0.16 impact and the needs
0.16 you know again we&;re very close to you
0.16 know hearing and feeling the needs of
0.16 the california farmers
0.16 you know who are struggling with you
0.16 know sustainability demands who are
0.16 struggling with labor shortages etc
0.16 so after polling in all of the the
0.16 farmers here and realizing that their
0.16 their needs and their demands were
0.16 very much aligned with what the global
0.16 farmer was facing right every farmer
0.16 around the world has a labor challenge
0.16 these days every farmer around the world
0.16 is being asked by their buyers to
0.16 provide more data on emissions and to
0.16 explain their sustainability footprint
0.16 right
0.16 so these things were happening so when
0.16 we started looking at that market we
0.16 felt that the pain points were very high
0.16 in the specialty fruits and vegetables
0.16 market just because of the amount of
0.16 labor that they need
0.16 and also the fact that technology
0.16 solutions were not being targeted
0.16 towards them because it was seen as a
0.16 niche market where the volumes were low
0.16 the margins were low right all the big
0.16 companies
0.16 the big equipment companies if you look
0.16 at their tractor sizes right even the
0.16 recent announcements
0.16 you know the tractor sizes are very much
0.16 catering towards the
0.16 the large farm operations not the
0.16 specialty tractors so we wanted to make
0.16 a difference with the specialty tractors
0.16 and then make a difference around the
0.16 world
0.16 so that&;s why all of that research
0.16 basically led us to the conclusion that
0.16 if we can build a high-tech tractor that
0.16 answers the demands of the fruits and
0.16 vegetables farmers
0.16 and if that class is the most commonly
0.16 used tractor platform in the world
0.16 we can really increase the volumes of
0.16 the tractor side
0.16 and then
0.16 bring the cost down and make high tech
0.16 available to the farmers right at a much
0.16 lower cost just because of the the
0.16 volumes that we can produce this in
0.16 so that&;s always been our philosophy and
0.16 mindset and the market research backed
0.16 it up and the customer&;s answers also
0.16 backed it up yeah
0.16 that the digital transformation side of

0.16 yeah so for us when we talk to farmers
0.16 it&;s a very straightforward value
0.16 proposition
0.16 number one it&;s electric which means and
0.16 it does everything your existing tractor
0.16 in this class does which means you&;re
0.16 seeing diesel savings
0.16 number two
0.16 we can elevate your tractor driver we
0.16 can take him off the seat
0.16 and have him manage six to eight
0.16 tractors right we are using technology
0.16 to make it easy for the tractor driver
0.16 to manage a fleet
0.16 not using technology to say you should
0.16 hire a more skilled person
0.16 so that results in wow in labor
0.16 efficiency and savings right so your
0.16 tractor driver now you know can do more
0.16 and can do other jobs on the farm
0.16 and watch a fleet of six to eight

0.16 so those two things result in tremendous
0.16 savings but also the fact that our
0.16 tractor and we have sensors that enable

0.16 keeping an eye on not just the operation
0.16 that&;s happening behind them but also
0.16 seeing what&;s happening uh you know at
0.16 the plant level
0.16 and then relay that back to the farm
0.16 operations manager or the owner of the
0.16 farm
0.16 just going back to the beginning so when
0.16 was the first unit put out um in

0.16 our first electric tractor has been out
0.16 which is what we call our alpha model
0.16 right was a very small electric tractor
0.16 that has been in testing since 2017
0.16 and then we built our beta tractor which
0.16 showcased both you know electric and

0.16 and then now we have our pilot series
0.16 tractor and the as we have gone through
0.16 these iterations we have collected a lot
0.16 of feedback from farmers
0.16 and changed the tractor so that we are
0.16 taking their uh you know their feedback
0.16 into account
0.16 and now we have our pilot series tractor
0.16 and now we have our next generation
0.16 tractor coming out
0.16 which will be the the production design
0.16 and then heading out to production so we
0.16 have like the longest history of
0.16 electric vehicle development out in the
0.16 farm
0.16 and not just here but also globally
0.16 right our first alpha tractor we
0.16 collected feedback in asia to see what
0.16 the asian farmer wants
0.16 and now with our pilot series tractors
0.16 again we&;re out in the field constantly
0.16 working with farmers
0.16 with their drivers and their implements
0.16 to get feedback on uh not just our
0.16 tractor but also how our tractor
0.16 integrates into their operations
0.16 how did you go about building a team to
0.16 put all this together you know over this
0.16 period of time i mean i&;m sure you know
0.16 like any company people do will come and
0.16 go a bit but but what&;s sort of that
0.16 core that you&;re looking for for people
0.16 while you&;re trying to get to this end
0.16 goal of i mean really transforming an
0.16 industry
0.16 exactly uh and what we look for when we
0.16 when we bring people to join our team
0.16 jared is the mission focus right and our
0.16 mission focus has always been farmer
0.16 first
0.16 like how do we provide solutions that
0.16 make sense for the farmer
0.16 and the second part of that is
0.16 sustainability how do we do that in such
0.16 a way that it&;s long-term sustainable
0.16 for the health of the soil for the
0.16 health of the farmer and the community
0.16 so those are the two areas so when we
0.16 look for people we look for people who
0.16 who really feel an emotional connection
0.16 to that mission of you know of making
0.16 our food ecosystem more profitable for
0.16 the farmers number one
0.16 and more sustainable because without the
0.16 profitability the sustainability is not
0.16 going to come that&;s right so that&;s our
0.16 mission focus so to answer your question
0.16 in the early days it was quite
0.16 challenging because we were trying to
0.16 hire the the best talent pool
0.16 right who had a connection to the food
0.16 ecosystem
0.16 and then we would take them away from
0.16 their comfortable chairs and desks and
0.16 everything else that you see in silicon
0.16 valley yeah and put them in a you know
0.16 put them in a tent on a farm right and
0.16 say guys we&;re gonna be here for the
0.16 next week
0.16 you know they&;re looking to feel the
0.16 pain yeah
0.16 exactly yeah
0.16 so but off late right and even now a
0.16 part of our recruiting process is we
0.16 take all the people out to the farm
0.16 it doesn&;t matter whether you&;re in the
0.16 administration side at monarch or
0.16 whether you&;re on the engineering side
0.16 or you&;re on the testing side
0.16 all of these people get a chance to see
0.16 the farm
0.16 see the tractor operating on the farm
0.16 and understand why what we&;re doing is
0.16 very important
0.16 so to answer your question it&;s it&;s it
0.16 is quite challenging this is not
0.16 something for
0.16 that is something for every engineer
0.16 yeah but for the right kind of engineers
0.16 who really want to make a difference
0.16 right like at a global scale and to
0.16 change the food ecosystem
0.16 i think this is the right one and for
0.16 the right kind of engineers who want to
0.16 get their feet dirty
0.16 and they&;re not afraid of getting their
0.16 laptop wet and dirty out in the mud
0.16 this is the right kind of uh you know
0.16 right kind of job so we we try very hard
0.16 to find the right people it&;s not easy
0.16 but we&;re very selective about that as
0.16 well
0.16 have you seen have you i have seen it in
0.16 work where you there&;s there&;s uh types
0.16 of people that they just haven&;t been
0.16 out let&;s say they haven&;t been out in
0.16 the field like they&;ve never done in
0.16 their life um you know in my case coming
0.16 from the heavy industry side you know
0.16 more like you know
0.16 construction mining sites and that sort
0.16 of thing
0.16 um but then you see some people that
0.16 just as their personality they&;re so
0.16 passionate
0.16 and they&;re so their willpower is so
0.16 great
0.16 someone that you might think would
0.16 actually be able to handle it once they
0.16 get out into the real world application
0.16 they&;re it&;s not for them but then
0.16 someone else will step up that just they
0.16 just haven&;t had the opportunity have
0.16 you seen that i mean you must sort of
0.16 see a different side of people when you
0.16 bring them out into that tent for a week
0.16 out in the middle of an agriculture
0.16 setting
0.16 yeah most definitely right and we have
0.16 seen people that we initially thought oh
0.16 my god this person is not going to cut
0.16 it
0.16 you know actually flourish
0.16 and turn into some of our you know rock
0.16 star
0.16 team members whether it&;s on the sales
0.16 side whether it&;s on the marketing side
0.16 whether it&;s on the engineering side or
0.16 administration site but to answer a
0.16 question we&;ve also seen people that we
0.16 thought you know will flourish in this
0.16 environment and it&;s just too hard
0.16 there&;s always an easier way to make
0.16 money
0.16 if if that&;s the primary motivator
0.16 especially uh out here in the bay area
0.16 right
0.16 so we&;re not afraid to um you know uh
0.16 wish them well and yeah you know have
0.16 them explore the other adventures but i
0.16 think the question that you&;re asking
0.16 jared is a great point
0.16 i think we need a new kind of mindset
0.16 and that comes from a balance in the
0.16 team between the experienced side and
0.16 also new people who are new to this
0.16 field working together
0.16 if we just have one or the other we are
0.16 not going to see the kind of accelerated
0.16 innovation that we want at monarch
0.16 so that&;s what we try to find a balance
0.16 of we want people who understand farming
0.16 we want want people who who relate to
0.16 this kind of technology on the
0.16 electrification side on some of the
0.16 smart automated features etc but at the
0.16 same time we want people to come in with
0.16 a clear mindset and say how do i solve
0.16 this farmer&;s problem right
0.16 so it&;s that mixture of both those
0.16 people working together that&;s the magic
0.16 you you mentioned you mentioned
0.16 engineers a couple times and i&;m just
0.16 curious putting this technology together
0.16 um the design of the tractor but also
0.16 the integration of technology is it just
0.16 engineers that do it or how does that
0.16 actually all
0.16 physically come together um as an end
0.16 product like what what kind of people i
0.16 mean you must have all diff it might is
0.16 it just engineers or are there other
0.16 uh specialists that need need to come in
0.16 no i think it takes a whole ecosystem
0.16 right so when our product development
0.16 cycle runs all the way from technology
0.16 side where the engineers contribute but
0.16 all the way down to new tractor drivers
0.16 right we bring in tractor drivers
0.16 uh both who are have existing experience
0.16 on the farm but also new ones who are
0.16 probably currently working in
0.16 construction or they&;re working other
0.16 skilled labor jobs
0.16 they are a part of our testing team so
0.16 we have a dedicated testing team we have
0.16 our own dedicated farm out here
0.16 and it&;s basically the whole team
0.16 working together so at the end of the
0.16 day if our technology is
0.16 is clever but if the end user cannot use
0.16 it it&;s a fail yeah so
0.16 and we&;re also not afraid of putting our
0.16 tractor into actual tractor driver&;s
0.16 hands
0.16 uh at other farms and saying hey use
0.16 this right and to be honest there are a
0.16 number of times when they&;ve come back
0.16 and said hey this this does not work the
0.16 way i wanted to or i&;m having a problem
0.16 here or yes you think it should happen
0.16 this way but it doesn&;t right so we take
0.16 all that feedback in so to answer your
0.16 question it&;s not just the engineering
0.16 side the magic is getting that whole
0.16 ecosystem
0.16 working together
0.16 out on the farm right so the engineer
0.16 has to be on the farm but also the
0.16 tractor driver has to be there and there
0.16 has to be somebody enabling that
0.16 conversation
0.16 for us to make that technology better
0.16 well that kind of that kind of dovetails
0.16 nicely into the integration question
0.16 because um these on these farms i mean
0.16 if they&;ve got i i don&;t know i mean i&;m
0.16 i&;m not an expert in it but let&;s say
0.16 they&;ve got 50 tractors and now you&;re
0.16 they&;re going to buy eight from you to
0.16 sort of test them out on in their their
0.16 environment
0.16 um
0.16 how does that work when you have you
0.16 know one one person running eight
0.16 tractors but then you have 40 other
0.16 tractors
0.16 um that are all that are not they&;re
0.16 being manually operated um
0.16 or or maybe there&;s a mixture of
0.16 manually and then they&;ve got other
0.16 kinds that are half automated all these
0.16 different things that are going on so
0.16 how do you integrate all that in
0.16 yeah no definitely and we see that as a
0.16 as a process jared so we can&;t expect
0.16 the farmer to to literally quote unquote
0.16 bet the farm right on our technology
0.16 so we see it as an integration that&;s
0.16 why it&;s important that the existing
0.16 people play a
0.16 a role in this transition so to answer
0.16 your question if they have 40 tractors
0.16 or 50 tractors right now and they buy
0.16 eight of our tractors
0.16 it&;s important that their existing
0.16 people can use them they can run
0.16 existing operations the way they have
0.16 done it and just integrate our equipment
0.16 into existing operations without
0.16 fundamental changes right a number of
0.16 our competitors
0.16 when they make these unique robots
0.16 they&;re like oh don&;t worry now it&;s as
0.16 of service and one of our personnel will
0.16 be on the field with you and testing all
0.16 of these things and now you&;re asking
0.16 for operational changes from the
0.16 farmer&;s standpoint right we&;re trying
0.16 to avoid that and we&;re saying hey
0.16 remove one or two of your tractors plug
0.16 our tractors in
0.16 and let&;s do the operation the same way
0.16 with your people with your implements
0.16 and as you get confidence we do expect
0.16 them to transition more and more of
0.16 their tractors right over to monarch
0.16 tractors so that&;s our philosophy and
0.16 it&;s going to take three or four years
0.16 for the farm to you know to transition
0.16 50 70 80 90 of their tractors over yeah
0.16 i i i don&;t want to let this what you
0.16 just said just sort of slip past because
0.16 there is a lot of that model going on
0.16 i&;ve had people on the show on i&;m
0.16 talking about that model where it&;s sort
0.16 of that service model and it&;s sort of a
0.16 restructuring of operations yeah you
0.16 probably uh i mean you would have had
0.16 the option to go that way yeah um
0.16 what and i&;m sure it was a discussion in
0.16 your team
0.16 what what was the why did you choose
0.16 this road as opposed to going that that
0.16 sort of service you know
0.16 not rental i forget what they what&;s the
0.16 term they use for that when they do that
0.16 yeah it&;s commonly farming as a service
0.16 or robot as a service yeah right
0.16 so
0.16 for us also don&;t get me wrong
0.16 at some point people will be able to you
0.16 know
0.16 rent our tractor use our tractor as a
0.16 service model eventually and that will
0.16 be a component of
0.16 monarch offers
0.16 but
0.16 uh we were very clear that we had to set
0.16 a high bar the high bar is the track the
0.16 tractor is a key component of farm
0.16 operations today around the world
0.16 and we need to give the farmer the
0.16 confidence that our tractor can
0.16 basically replace their existing diesel
0.16 tractor that requires a lot of skilled
0.16 driver hours on it
0.16 so if the bar is that then we have to
0.16 like kind of come out with a product
0.16 that meets the cost requirements the
0.16 operations requirements and the people
0.16 requirements right
0.16 so we set that high bar for ourselves
0.16 uh and that was the reason why we said
0.16 if we don&;t succeed on that as a service
0.16 allows us to skirt a few of those things
0.16 right if we do it as a service i don&;t
0.16 need to worry about if the existing
0.16 labor can actually operate our tractor
0.16 or not right we have our people doing it
0.16 right yes it lowers the bar
0.16 but from a tech standpoint and from an
0.16 adoption standpoint that&;s also not
0.16 great and especially when it comes to
0.16 peak times everybody wants the tractor
0.16 and if you&;re as a service how do we
0.16 scale it
0.16 how do we get utilization up right we&;re
0.16 going to be limited on that side so from
0.16 a product perspective we have set a very
0.16 high bar for ourselves saying that we
0.16 should be able to convince a farmer that
0.16 they should replace their existing
0.16 diesel tractor with our tractor
0.16 you know apples to apples there right
0.16 and then
0.16 you know if we can meet that target then
0.16 we have uh something of value here right
0.16 so that&;s how we looked at it to to be
0.16 honest uh and like i said as a service
0.16 has a is is not a bad thing right it has
0.16 its place
0.16 uh it was just not a path that we wanted
0.16 to chase down we wanted a higher bar
0.16 well you&;re also you must i mean there
0.16 must be a huge market potential for for
0.16 also smaller operators as well i mean
0.16 have you got a lot of interest from
0.16 people that just have one or two
0.16 tractors um i would i would think that
0.16 be i mean especially like in areas like
0.16 california and that that there must be a
0.16 demand for that as well isn&;t there yes
0.16 there&;s been a lot of interest from the
0.16 smaller farm operations the smaller
0.16 farmers as well who just have one or two
0.16 tractors
0.16 um and that&;s again because of the size
0.16 of our tractor and how easy it&;s to
0.16 operate in the electric nature of it but
0.16 also we are hoping to transform the
0.16 small farmers operations right if that
0.16 small farmer you know
0.16 might be operating the tractor for
0.16 mowing
0.16 if we can kind of automate that mowing
0.16 side where he programs at once and then
0.16 we can do the mowing right at night in a
0.16 quiet manner right when the safety
0.16 considerations are much more controlled
0.16 you know and it&;s it&;s
0.16 we&;re giving him some time back on the
0.16 mowing side etc so those are the kind of
0.16 things that the small farmers really
0.16 find a lot of value in the monarch
0.16 tractor as well well i was curious about
0.16 this did is is you are can you
0.16 depending on their needs i can&;t imagine
0.16 you can cover everything
0.16 so something are they
0.16 can they retrofit it or does it or over
0.16 years is the technologies are going to
0.16 continue to expand to offer more how are
0.16 you sort of
0.16 for lack of a better word customizing it
0.16 to their needs like based on if they
0.16 need spray or they or they&;re needing it
0.16 to mow or whatever their need or
0.16 collecting certain amounts of data or
0.16 certain types of data how do you sort of
0.16 juggle all of that
0.16 yeah and that&;s the beauty of like
0.16 having a traditional tractor interface
0.16 where like when you if a farmer looks at
0.16 a tractor from the back
0.16 you won&;t be able to tell that it&;s an
0.16 electric automated tractor apart from
0.16 the roof right because we have the same
0.16 hydraulic connections we have the same
0.16 pto we have the same three-point hitch
0.16 right and all of those are controllable
0.16 for us you know from the automation side
0.16 so once you program them or once you use
0.16 them the tractor driver can jump off the
0.16 thing and you know we can repeat those
0.16 operations just the way he wants them so
0.16 to answer a question if the farmer has
0.16 customized his mower or sprayer or
0.16 has a custom implement that is currently
0.16 uh you know being pulled with a draw bar
0.16 or a pt or shaft or run by hydraulics
0.16 we know we get to do all of that right
0.16 so that&;s the huge advantage of keeping
0.16 the tractor platform as is from an
0.16 interface standpoint
0.16 also if they want to customize it
0.16 right as long as the customization is on
0.16 the implement side it&;s very easy
0.16 right if they want to customize the
0.16 tractor then we need to be a part of
0.16 that conversation just because of the
0.16 automation side
0.16 so
0.16 but we&;re already deploying smart
0.16 features that allow us to account for
0.16 any new implements that they attach
0.16 right and still be able to maintain
0.16 these operations from a safety
0.16 standpoint to answer your question our
0.16 focus initially is definitely on mowing
0.16 it&;s on spraying it&;s on hauling it&;s on
0.16 weeding
0.16 those are the four operations that out
0.16 of the box right that we want to support
0.16 for farmers
0.16 but nothing stopping them from attaching
0.16 their implement to the standard uh
0.16 interface at the back and then running
0.16 the tractor right right just as any
0.16 other tractor right i i just want to
0.16 quickly go back to that engineering side
0.16 because you you had to design a tractor
0.16 and then you had to make it electric
0.16 so yeah um was i mean that must have
0.16 been it must have been quite a a process
0.16 those first couple years just i mean
0.16 in manufacturing you know the the
0.16 suspension system the frame like there&;s
0.16 all these nuts and bolts that you gotta
0.16 design while you&;re designing this sort
0.16 of futuristic way of doing things right
0.16 um i mean that
0.16 day one let&;s go with day one actually
0.16 we&;re gonna start designing it well i
0.16 mean
0.16 how do you even how do you even start
0.16 the conversation it&;s it&;s a little
0.16 beyond my pay grade and that&;s why i&;m
0.16 at it
0.16 no but again that&;s where the team comes
0.16 into play
0.16 you know
0.16 it&;s a very uh from from a leadership
0.16 standpoint it&;s an experienced team
0.16 that&;s done these kind of very complex
0.16 devices before right so if you look at
0.16 our our chief technology officer dr
0.16 zachary omahundra right he&;s done
0.16 everything from electric cars to
0.16 automated planters
0.16 to
0.16 elect you know to electric aircraft
0.16 projects etc so
0.16 the technology that we&;re bringing in
0.16 you know is experience technology that&;s
0.16 been proven in other areas whether it&;s
0.16 aerospace whether it&;s automotive or or
0.16 agriculture and we&;re bringing
0.16 that to our product number one
0.16 number two is even on the digital and
0.16 autonomy side you know we&;re bringing
0.16 the latest and greatest technology
0.16 you know from if you think about our
0.16 chief digital officer is chris whitney
0.16 right he&;s
0.16 he&;s had decades of experience in
0.16 automation
0.16 uh the kids of experience in data and
0.16 connectivity so when we say hey how do
0.16 we make an automated tractor work where
0.16 there&;s no connectivity and sometimes we
0.16 lose even a gps signal especially in
0.16 specialty
0.16 agriculture right we have an experienced
0.16 team that solved these problems before
0.16 that we&;re bringing to the table but
0.16 jared you&;re absolutely right the way we
0.16 went about it was we had to reinvent the
0.16 tractor from the inside out which means
0.16 all the nuts and bolts had to work
0.16 at the same time
0.16 we had to make sure that the tractor did
0.16 everything that existing tractor did
0.16 right so for example making sure that
0.16 the hydraulics work the three-point has
0.16 worked the pto worked you know at
0.16 different speeds
0.16 and how would be smart and automated to
0.16 where an existing driver who&;s not
0.16 familiar with technology can use it
0.16 yeah that&;s our goal and that&;s our
0.16 difference as well from the big tractor
0.16 companies and how we approach the
0.16 problem well i just yeah i was thinking
0.16 talk about the hydraulics i was just
0.16 thinking you could have the most amazing
0.16 tractor and if a farmer
0.16 went to uh to make an adjustment and the
0.16 hydraulic system wasn&;t right he would
0.16 could care less if the electric system
0.16 was amazing yeah exactly yeah yeah how
0.16 good the cameras are at that time is not
0.16 gonna yeah
0.16 he&;ll still be hurling his wrench at the
0.16 ground did um did uh
0.16 what has been the most challenging
0.16 through this through this whole period
0.16 you know has it been designed funding
0.16 team building
0.16 you know when you sort of look back i
0.16 mean you&;ve got there&;s it&;s a very
0.16 bright future ahead and i think that
0.16 that that round b of funding is a
0.16 testament to that
0.16 but looking back
0.16 what what is a stretch of time that you
0.16 went this this is a challenge
0.16 yeah i mean
0.16 my philosophy has always been it&;s the
0.16 next stretch that&;s going to be the most
0.16 challenging so we always need to be
0.16 prepared for it right yeah but honestly
0.16 speaking jared i mean uh the ag industry
0.16 and farmers are a very demanding
0.16 customer right right in terms of if you
0.16 look at how ag equipment is used
0.16 uh just because of the nature of the
0.16 industry right it&;s uh it&;s it&;s very
0.16 time constrained
0.16 we don&;t have the kind of
0.16 margins that other industries sometimes
0.16 have so farmers have to do a lot with
0.16 very little
0.16 so then what happens on the equipment
0.16 side is they they make the equipment
0.16 they push the limits of what the
0.16 equipment capabilities are
0.16 constantly
0.16 so for us our challenge is how do we
0.16 make sure that we build a robust
0.16 reliable tractor
0.16 that when we give it to a farmer will
0.16 exceed his
0.16 expectations right is the biggest
0.16 challenge we have
0.16 that has been the biggest challenge for
0.16 the last year and a half and that will
0.16 continue to be a challenge going forward
0.16 but that&;s our goal our goal is not to
0.16 say hey look at this wow technology
0.16 right it&;s about saying
0.16 here&;s a tech that&;s going to make a
0.16 difference to your bottom line
0.16 and it&;s going to exceed your
0.16 expectations so
0.16 that&;s that&;s a high bar when it comes
0.16 to farmers
0.16 you know and i
0.16 um and i can honestly say on this
0.16 interview and even when i first talked
0.16 to you i noticed that that that shift or
0.16 um that that approach that you had
0.16 because i mean i come from the nuts and
0.16 bolts world um and so when i&;m in a
0.16 conversation and it probably makes it
0.16 some in some way qualifies me to be the
0.16 host because i need it sort of brought
0.16 down to a level where other people can
0.16 understand so i can understand it
0.16 and and i&;ve talked to people that
0.16 they&;re approaching it as in we&;re
0.16 basically going to turn your whole world
0.16 upside down
0.16 and people that are living in you
0.16 they&;re making a living off this and
0.16 some of the living is quite hard i mean
0.16 farming is notoriously a very
0.16 challenging thing and they&;re not
0.16 dealing with these huge margins
0.16 right now so you come in and you say
0.16 yeah we&;re going to turn your whole
0.16 world upside down because we&;re amazing
0.16 and we&;re smarter than you it does not
0.16 work like it really and you see it all
0.16 the time yeah so so going back to your
0.16 so going over to your leadership
0.16 is that something i mean and i&;ve talked
0.16 to you only a couple times um but i&;ve
0.16 seen your approach is that something you
0.16 learned um is it something you realized
0.16 with monarch or is it something in
0.16 another
0.16 in another part of your career where you
0.16 realize you had to approach it sort of
0.16 from that ground level for customers
0.16 yeah this was something that predated
0.16 monarch varied but i&;ve learned it the
0.16 hard way from the school of hard knocks
0.16 where we have developed you know
0.16 technology sometimes and gone out and
0.16 then realized that the farmer has
0.16 generational insights
0.16 if the farmer is still doing farming
0.16 by definition is successful
0.16 right and he&;s successful very often
0.16 because of his insights or her insights
0.16 over and often gathered over generations
0.16 right they know their land they know
0.16 their soil they know their crop they
0.16 know their weather better than we can at
0.16 this point in time and probably in the
0.16 foreseeable future
0.16 and you know honestly speaking i&;ve been
0.16 out there on the farm standing there
0.16 thinking holy cow
0.16 i did not realize all these nuances we
0.16 have to go back to the drawing board
0.16 so
0.16 that&;s the school of hard knocks and i
0.16 often tell people i have a lot of
0.16 lashings on my back to show for this
0.16 and i don&;t want to get them again so
0.16 let&;s go talk to the farmers who know
0.16 best let&;s give them a tool
0.16 instead of telling them how to do it you
0.16 know give them a tool that they can use
0.16 any way they want to
0.16 that&;s been our philosophy from day one
0.16 our philosophy from day one is the
0.16 farmer knows best we need to be their
0.16 partner in giving them the best tools
0.16 not in showing up on their farm and
0.16 saying hey this is how you should do
0.16 things right because if we take that
0.16 approach
0.16 guaranteed
0.16 guaranteed to fail we are probably
0.16 missing out on 80 of their insights and
0.16 knowledge that they have right
0.16 and i&;ve learned it the hard way right
0.16 i&;ve been on those farms where i look
0.16 like a complete idiot
0.16 right
0.16 oh i&;ve been there i&;ve been there
0.16 i&;ve been there with my little ipad in
0.16 my hand
0.16 yeah the answer went oh boy i&;m gonna
0.16 actually uh just walk around quietly
0.16 yeah exactly
0.16 ask questions and learn right not tell
0.16 them how things do right
0.16 at monarch our philosophy is we have to
0.16 give them the best tool
0.16 and help them right in
0.16 in completing their operations so that&;s
0.16 always been our philosophy from day one
0.16 just circling back to the investors do
0.16 you think that that approach um and i&;m
0.16 i&;m not asking this with any assumption
0.16 it&;s a genuine question does do you
0.16 think that approach
0.16 um
0.16 does that do the do the investors value
0.16 that as well that they&;re seeing how
0.16 you&;re approaching the farmers and they
0.16 see it&;s more of a long-term solution
0.16 um or or are they basically looking at
0.16 the technology the steps that you&;ve
0.16 made and that sort of thing or do they
0.16 sort of look at the whole thing do you
0.16 think that that sort of that
0.16 on the ground focus um is a is a value
0.16 add for them
0.16 definitely both components they want to
0.16 make sure that our technology is
0.16 innovative and robust and is something
0.16 that we have an advantage on because
0.16 they&;re investing into our company they
0.16 want to make sure that
0.16 it&;s not a technology that somebody else
0.16 can develop in years right
0.16 so we feel like you know we do have a
0.16 technology that&;s of value there so the
0.16 investors want to get some confidence on
0.16 that side there but also
0.16 they want to make sure these these days
0.16 investors are quite savvy
0.16 uh especially
0.16 investors investing in food and act
0.16 because they have also gone through a
0.16 number of uh
0.16 historical
0.16 uh investments where
0.16 they understand the challenges of
0.16 succeeding in farming so they want to
0.16 talk to the farmer they&;re like they&;re
0.16 like monarch your team is great your
0.16 technology is great we want to talk to
0.16 the farmer and here what their
0.16 perspective on your technology is
0.16 so they look at both those things is the
0.16 technology of value do we have a
0.16 differentiator
0.16 what do the farmers think about your
0.16 technology and use their real value for
0.16 the farmer
0.16 so they want uh all of our investors
0.16 have done that they&;ve talked to our our
0.16 farm partners directly
0.16 and gotten that feedback and that
0.16 confidence before they did the
0.16 investment but also honestly there&;s
0.16 been a lot of investors who said we know
0.16 farming is hard
0.16 uh you know getting ag tech to be
0.16 successful is very hard
0.16 so this is not our field to play in and
0.16 that&;s okay with us too
0.16 yeah you want people i mean you want
0.16 people that believe in what you&;re doing
0.16 and and that really understand the
0.16 process of it as well you don&;t want
0.16 blind belief because it is going to be a
0.16 long process exactly right we won&;t
0.16 believe we want people who to join us
0.16 who believe in our team who believe in
0.16 our product
0.16 and who understand that this is a hard
0.16 problem yeah and very often especially
0.16 tech investors
0.16 you know uh you know just like any other
0.16 investor they&;re looking at where they
0.16 can put their money in and what their
0.16 rate of return is in the shortest period
0.16 of time right yeah
0.16 so those are not our investors so i&;m
0.16 very proud of the kind of investors we
0.16 have
0.16 these are all investors with a long-term
0.16 perspective and they believe in the fact
0.16 that our product can change farming for
0.16 farmers around the world
0.16 and without that
0.16 you know we don&;t have them join uh join
0.16 monarch yeah what um just before we wrap
0.16 up the interview you sort of touched on
0.16 it earlier but what&;s sort of the next
0.16 um from your perspective and of course
0.16 you&;re you&;re you&;ve talked a lot about
0.16 listening to farmers and on the ground
0.16 um but from what your perspective right
0.16 now where do you see what&;s what&;s the
0.16 next couple years next few years uh what
0.16 what are you what are your goals and
0.16 targets and and landmarks you need to
0.16 hit
0.16 yeah for us it&;s it&;s about now you know
0.16 fulfilling the faith that a lot of
0.16 farmers have put in us
0.16 you know by putting their reservations
0.16 in so we need to put tractors in their
0.16 hands
0.16 uh allow their people to use it so
0.16 that&;s what the next two years is going
0.16 to look like
0.16 and start doing that and also supporting
0.16 the farmers
0.16 i&;m i&;m under no illusion and nobody on
0.16 our team is under any illusion that new
0.16 technology is going to be challenging to
0.16 deploy so we&;re spending a lot of time
0.16 on how do we support our early adopter
0.16 farmers to the best
0.16 uh ability possible so that they don&;t
0.16 feel the brunt of tech very often right
0.16 in the past
0.16 uh you know aggregate has been about
0.16 parachuting solutions right
0.16 it&;s basically you know they just drop a
0.16 solution off into the field tell farmers
0.16 how amazing it is and then that&;s that
0.16 right and that&;s the reason why we have
0.16 not seen these things get we have not
0.16 seen big changes right what we want to
0.16 do is we want to be there out on the
0.16 farm with them if something happens to
0.16 our tractor we want to support them
0.16 through that whole process and make sure
0.16 that their operations are not impacted
0.16 so our next two years is about putting
0.16 our tractors into farmer sands and
0.16 supporting them
0.16 as and when they have challenges right
0.16 and we we don&;t expect a smooth rollout
0.16 right we expect to work with farmers
0.16 through it so that&;s our philosophy
0.16 so that&;s a that&;s a big ask that&;s what
0.16 we&;re prepping for yeah
0.16 it&;s uh no it&;s very exciting and i
0.16 really i really enjoy just and i right
0.16 from when i first talked to you as i
0.16 mentioned earlier i i saw that there was
0.16 a genuine approach to try to develop
0.16 this in a way that yeah it&;s not
0.16 parachuting in it&;s actually trying to
0.16 integrate
0.16 um based on their needs but bring a new
0.16 technology and you are transforming an
0.16 industry but transform it with the
0.16 farmers not not sort of in spite of them
0.16 and it&;s you know it&;s it&;s it&;s really
0.16 great to see yeah um you know uh we&;ve
0.16 we&;ve got a lot of agriculture out here
0.16 um in bc vancouver where i&;m based so
0.16 you know we&;re we&;re trying to do a lot
0.16 to part two so hopefully you&;ll come
0.16 back on within the next year or so um
0.16 and hopefully you&;ll have some units out
0.16 on the ground in bc and we can uh maybe
0.16 we can do some on-site stuff it&;d be
0.16 great to see uh actually be standing
0.16 beside the tractor doing one of these
